My hike and photo excursion yesterday, and subsequent post, reminded me of the first time I ever experimented with abstract photography. It was a similar exploration of man-made and modified objects, decaying and mostly neglected, found in a natural setting. Essentially an abandoned urban field near my house. This must have been at least 20 years ago. It doesn’t seem like that long ago, but it was a different reality from today in many ways. Digital photography was not common, so these images were captured on slide film, processed, and then scanned one at a time. Quite a long process compared to today’s immediacy. Film has made a slight comeback, and I do sometimes feel nostalgia about the good old days. I’m not sharing these images because I think they are great or that I’m proud of them. It’s more about examining my path as I look back on my journey, and think about my evolution as a photographer. What is it about color, texture, and close-up decay that even today, still interests me I wonder?
